We only use the highest quality components from highly regarded brands such as Neutrik, Alps, Panasonic, Jensen, Belton, and ON Semiconductor. Moreover, our excellent thermal design and layout ensures long component life and high reliability.
Our amps are built to last a lifetime and we truly stand by that statement by including a Limited Lifetime Warranty.
Both versions of the VOD-50 — valve and MOSFET — contain true high voltage overdrive circuits for an extremely touch sensitive and dynamic response. Whether you like to ride your guitar's volume knob, or vary your picking attack, our preamp will accentuate your playing dynamics by reacting musically with varying levels of delicious crunchiness.
With cascaded triode and pentode gain stages, the harmonics are very rich and the breakup very gradual and smooth as you turn up the gain. The gain controls are really mid-boost controls with a very wide, tailored Q so that the tonal balance of your guitar stays even throughout their range. This contrasts sharply to simple gain/volume controls which only sound good in a very restricted range, and either sound too dull below it, or too scooped above it.
As a premium feature of our valve circuit, we supply the filaments with clean direct current for low noise operation.
Two switchable channels with boost are available for the full range of overdrive tones (except perhaps heavy metal!). The clean channel is voiced to sound big and bold with deep lows and bright but smooth highs. By turning up the clean gain, you can bring the amp to the edge of breakup. And by engaging the boost switch, you get 6 dB of extra gain to get into juicy, sustaining blues territory.
The lead channel has a very balanced sound, retaining the open high-end detail that is often missing from dirt pedals, but never sounding harsh. Again, the boost switch gives an extra 6 dB of gain which at this level of saturation translates into a fatter sound with more singing sustain rather than more volume.
Our custom discrete 50 W Class AB power amp has been designed specifically for guitar. With its beefy, stiff, linear power supply, it provides a wide dynamic range and a snappy attack that's perfect for palm muting and funky comping. Turn it up loud and the notes start to compress courtesy of a very musical integrated compressor. A unique clean clipping circuit ensures it sounds amazingly good even when pushed to the max. At this level it will be more than loud enough for any gig, however loud your drummer may be.
The power amp will clip only on very loud transients but will do so very cleanly, rendering them barely noticeable. Anywhere below clipping, no audible distortion is produced by the power amp. In particular, there is no audible ugly crossover distortion that plagues so many Class AB designs. This allows you to transparently hear the pure Class A tone of the high voltage preamp.
Another big advantage of a clean, transparent power amp like ours, is you essentially have the same tone at any volume, since all the tone comes from the preamp. This makes it very versatile: get the same great sound on stage, in the studio, and even in your bedroom.
Our 2-band EQ is a variant of the active Baxandall topology. It gives a shelving 13 dB boost or cut in the bass and treble bands. There is very little interaction between the controls and the cutoff frequencies have been optimally chosen to sound very natural with guitar.
Active Baxandall EQs are very versatile and midrange shaping is possible with just the Treble and Bass controls. Just turn both Treble and Bass down for a mid hump and turn them both up for a mid scoop!
There is nothing quite like the sound of a real all-analogue long-tank spring reverb. Our unique reverb drive and recovery circuits are designed to bring the best out of the tank, for lush, shimmering highs and a rich, complex sound.
A serial effects loop is accessible from the back with a switch to set the signal level through the loop to Instrument — i.e. regular guitar signal level — or Line for professional studio effects units.
The effects loop can also be used to run a second amp from the VOD-50 preamp. Simply set the level to Instrument and connect a second amp to the Send output, leaving the Return input unplugged. Or, for a wide, spatial effect, put a stereo chorus in the loop and connect a second amp to the second output of the chorus unit.
Included with the amp is a high quality metal two-button foot switch with the highest quality and heaviest duty switches in existence. We've seen too many cheaper switches fail when subjected to a gigging guitarist's regular use. Our foot switch is designed to be reliable and to last forever.
The connection from foot switch to amp is via a standard quarter inch TRS cable which will integrate nicely with external effects/control systems like The Gig Rig's G2, Boss' ES8, Line 6's Helix or the G-SYSTEM by TC Electronic.
Our sturdy dovetail-jointed cabinets are made locally by a highly skilled craftsman. Made out of traditional lightweight solid pine, covered with durable black tolex, and fitted with heavy duty fixtures, these amps are ready for the rigours of the road.
We include a durable and attractive custom polyester dust cover with our amps. Since it covers the air vent on the top of the amp it will stop rain getting onto the circuit board when carrying the amp from your car to the gig. It would be a bummer if that were to happen!
